Compression Bandages
Compression bandages may not be the most sophisticated when it comes to technology but it has provided relief to a lot of people suffering from lymphoedema or venous ulcers. Since people afflicted with this illness have limbs which often experience size changes due to the destruction of elastic fibers, the compression bandages can offer sturdy support.
There are two varieties of compression bandages depending on the extent of its stretching properties. The short stretch compression bandages are the ones which are used for the long-term treatment of lymphoedema. It has a high resistance to movement within the limb involving muscles and joints. The long stretch variety can be easily adjusted. However, it must be removed at night because the strength of its compression may worsen blood flow instead of improving it.
Unlike steri strips which need to avoid moisture as much as possible, compression bandages have to be maintained and cleaned all the time. Its constant exposure to the skin of its wearer may serve as infection risk if the cleanliness of the compression bandage is not maintained. Washing it frequently should ensure it measures up to the standards of hygiene.
Anything in excess is harmful so make sure that the compression bandage is not too tight for its wearer. On the other hand, if its fibers are too elastic, it will be useless.
