Medical Bandages
In the terminology of laymen, a bandage is anything which is put directly on the wound in order to stop further bleeding. However, in the intricate world of medical jargon, medical bandages are only there to enforce a dressing. It is not put directly in the wound; rather, it is only put into place to support it.
There are many types of medical bandages depending on the severity or type of the wound: gauze bandages, compressed bandages, steri strips, triangular bandages and tube bandages among others. Medical bandages are primarily used as support for splints and dressings. Even if it is not in direct contact in the wound, it must always remain clean so as not to become favorable breeding grounds for bacteria and other harmful micro-organisms.
Medical bandages are intended to localize pressure in a wound to prevent a major blood loss. Although nurses spend years in medical schools to learn the proper procedure in applying medical bandages, anyone can learn how to apply it. This is important because no one can tell when an emergency will arrive. In the event of a dire situation needing the application of medical bandages, one has to have presence of mind and clean hands as much as possible when handling wounds.
